Shanghai's favourite jazz singer, partygoer and flagbearer for the city's underground gay community, takes the stage once more. Coco (23) is not only a local legend but China's first homosexual celebrity who does not cause a public uproar. He was even fortunate enough to sing for the German Bundeskanzler Schroder, as he visited Jiang Zemin last year. Coco came to Shanghai 7 years ago to study symphony compostion, classical music and 20th century music compostion at the Shanghai Music Academy. But he dropped out one year before the final exam. To blame for that was his passion for Jazz, which he discovered in the Cotton Club, Shanghai's first Jazz club, where he now has his regular appearances. Coco was recently touring in London with his pianist He Le. He is currently involved in two projects. One is a "purist" jazz album with vocals and piano, the other one is a fusion of Chinese traditional instruments, jazzy tunes and electronica.
