While the international art fare was held in Shanghai for the second time, Chinese artist could celebrate a very special event at a different venue. They managed to organize the first exhibition about modern Chinese art ever held in China. The exhibition, called "Fuck off", was held in a sleek two-tiered set-up at a wharf in Shanghai. Up to know contemporary art in China only received attention at art fares abroad. The man responsible for this retrospective on the still very young history of contemporary Chinese art is Ai Wei Wei (44).
He is a lecturer at the Beijing art academy, an archeologist and the doyen of modern Chinese art Born in Beijing as a son of a poet, Ai Wei Wei studied painting and film at the Central Beijing Arts Academy. 1981 he went to New York to study at Parsons School of Design. He had several solo exhibitons in New York and San Francisco before he returned to Beijing 1994.
