Previously, the only Beijing punk records available - aside from bootlegs - were compilations on cassette or vinyl, produced by the bands themselves and distributed in small quantities. Since trend scouts of an American jeans manufacturer stuck their noses into the growing and flowing Beijing punk rock scene, that is history. One of the most promising bands on Wuliao Jundi (Bored Contingent), China's first punk compilation, is called Brain Failure. The young group is ready to go for the international market. Their tracks show an impressive range of styles from uplifting ska beats to ballads that show the clear influence of 'oi’, a type of punk first played by working class British skinheads. Singer Xiao Rong (22), famous for his hyena screams, drummer Xu Lin (22), guitarist Wnag Jian (20) and US-bassist David o'Dell (26) play together since 1998.
