"I want to bring DJ culture to China," said Zhang Youdai with missionary zeal in an interview with DJ Magazine in November 99. The 34-year old DJ is the dance music pioneer in China. His show on the staterun Beijing Music Channel is famous for playing the Beatles next to Basement Jaxx, Prodigy next to Pink Floyd. A simple goal, one might think in the West, but with Chinese media still government-controlled, there are problems. In 1991 (just two years after Tiananmen) Youdai managed to persuade his station that without Western music they would loose the young audience. Since then he is still regarded as a 'dangerous element', his show on a Monday afternoon, the New Music Magazine, has been shut down countless times and his show's live slot was recently binned, because a member of a Beijing rock band said the Chinese equivalent of fuck on air. But nevertheless China's muisc and dance explosion is still going on. Thanks to Youdai? Not solely, but certainly for a major part. He is convinced that especially dance music, house and techno will really change the way young Chinese think about music.
